Jocotepec government honors reproductive health pioneer

In the framework of the March 8 commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Jocotepec government honored Silvia Flores as a trailblazer in the fields of reproductive health care, family planning and sex education. She has been actively involved in the municipality for more than five decades.

pg15aDistinguished by her dynamic and perky personality, Flores has an innate knack for relating with Mexican people of all social strata on topics once considered taboo in a predominantly Roman Catholic country.

A registered nurse and practicing midwife with hundreds of deliveries under her belt, Flores began community service for low-income families in 1969 out of her modest home in the south shore village of San Pedro Testistán. She went on to start the non-profit Centro de Desarrollo Jocotepec, A.C.  (CEDEJO) based in Jocotepec in 1986, before relocating the clinic to Ajijic in 1991. She also served at Chapala’s Tepehua Community Center and led its outreach to other communities.
