Chapala Morena candidate challenges election results

Juan de Dios García Velasco, the candidate who ran for Chapala mayor under the Morena party banner, filed a formal appeal with the Jalisco Electoral Tribunal on Tuesday, June 11, challenging the results of the recent local election.

Better known by the nickname Bebo, García Velasco says his party detected anomalies in the vote count at various polling stations in the municipality, leading to the presumption of a flawed process in the June 2 election.

According to the official tally reported by Jalisco’s Electoral Institute (IEPC), Alejandro Aguirre Curiel was reelected with 10,694 votes. García Velasco came second with 8,143 votes, a wide enough margin to suggest that he faces an uphill battle to overturn the election outcome.

Meanwhile, the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) is challenging the result of the election for federal legislators in Jalisco’s District 17, headquartered in Jocotepec and also encompassing Chapala.

According to the preliminary results program of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Antonio de Jesús Ramírez, candidate for the Sigamos Haciendo Historia coalition formed by Morena, the Green Party and the Partido del Trabajo, obtained 79,208 votes, equal to 49.2 percent of the total count. Luis Alonso Aguirre Lang, the candidate of the PRI-PAN-PRD (Fuerza y Corazón por México) coalition, earned 23.5 percent of the vote (37,791 votes), placing third behind J. Jesús Cabrera Jiménez of the Movimiento Ciudadano with 39,053 votes (24.15 percent).
