Mexico's pulsating Easter passion plays

Holy Week observances come to a dramatic peak on Good Friday, March 29, with traditional live reenactments of Jesus Christ’s march to Calvary and Crucifixion.

Throngs of lakesiders will take a spiritual journey following along the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) as interpreted in Chapala, Ajijic, San Antonio Tlayacapan and most other towns. Passion plays also take place in other parts of the region, including San Martin de los Flores in Tlaquepaque. The biggest drama in the country is staged in the Mexico City district of Iztapalapa, where crowds more than a million strong turn out each year to witness the spectacle.
