Mexico slips in tourism rankings

From 2006 to 2011, Mexico dropped two places – from eighth to 10th – in World Tourism Organization rankings for the most visited countries.

More visitors, however, are now coming to Mexico: 23.4 million in 2011, compared with 21.4 million in 2006.

Mexico’s federal government recently announced a goal of making the country one of the world’s top five nations for tourism by the end of the next decade.

But Tourism Secretary Claudia Ruiz Massieu recognizes that other countries are “advancing more quickly and growing with greater dynamism than ourselves.”

Some estimates suggest that by the end of 2013, Mexico may have dropped out of the top 12, attracting less visitors than Austria, Hong Kong and Russia.
