After Chapo Jr.’s arrest, could AMLO-Biden love-in break out at North American leaders’ summit?

The chief executives of Mexico, the United States and Canada meet  in Mexico City Tuesday, January 10 for the only the second North American Leaders’ Summit held since 2016.

pg3cTraditionally, the pre-summit spin tries to paint these get-togethers as opportunities for the leaders to bond and discuss solutions to the current and future challenges facing the region.  Disagreements over policy and long-standing grudges, however, often converge to ensure this doesn’t always happen.

But while the relationship between Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Joe Biden has not always been smooth sailing—AMLO refused to quickly acknowledge Biden’s election win in 2020 and boycotted the Summit of the Americas in June in Los Angeles in protest at the decision by the White House not to invite the leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela—events unfolding this week could set the tone for a much improved relationship, albeit not a blossoming romance.
