Cold blast set to hit Mexico

Colder winter weather is being felt in many parts of Mexico, including Jalisco, where temperatures will continue to dip throughout next week, forecasts predict.

pg5aThe 13th cold front of the 2023-24 season is expected to enter Mexican territory on Friday, December 1, generating wind and rain in the north, northwest and central Mexico, in addition to lows of -5 degrees Celsius in parts of Chihuahua and Durango, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

From highs of 24 degrees Celsius on Friday, December 1 in Guadalajara, the thermometer will drop to a high of 22 degrees on Saturday, December 2; 19 degrees on Sunday, December 3; and 17 degrees on Monday, December 4, according to weather.com. Metro-area lows will hover between 10 and 12 degrees Celcius. The sun will mostly be hidden by clouds throughout the weekend, and a few showers might also be in the cards, the forecaster says.  Due to the cold front, the cloudy climate is set to continue throughout most of next week.

The Jalisco Education Department (SEJ) authorities this week announced that schools in Jalisco will be permitted to delay their opening times should the cold weather worsen over the coming weeks.  However, SEJ  said it has not yet received any requests from schools.  Schools will also allow students to wear extra clothes other than their uniforms to keep warm.  Schools start their two-week vacation period on December 15.

The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) says it expects a 30-percent increase in respiratory diseases during the winter. So far this season, 900,000 influenza vaccines have been administered, according to Health Secretary Fernando Petersen. The vaccines are free to everyone at all SSJ health clinics.
