Military run airline takes to the skies

On December 26, the inaugural flight of the new federal government-operated airline, Mexicana de Aviacion, took off from the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) in Mexico City bound for the recently opened airport in Tulum, Quintana Roo.

pg1bWatching the departure on monitors from his regular morning press conference was President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who championed the purchase and resurrection of Mexicana, which filed for bankruptcy more than a decade ago.

Unfortunately, due to foggy weather conditions, the flight was diverted to Mérida, and eventually arrived in Tulum with a five-hour delay.

Maintaining the president’s rather polemic strategy of handing many civic duties over to the nation’s military, Mexicana will be administered by the Mexican Defense Ministry (Sedena), along with its two hubs, AIFA and the Tulum airport.
