Sinaloa, Durango best spots for viewing April 2024 total eclipse

Avid local stargazers who have never experienced a total solar eclipse might wish to hurry and book a coveted hotel room in Mazatlan for April 8, 2024.

pg7On this day, the first major eclipse of the sun in North America since 2017 will be visible from Mexico, 14 U.S. states and southeastern Canada.

The new moon will cover 100 percent of the sun as viewed from a narrow path stretching from the state of Sinaloa through the United States to Newfoundland, Canada.

The eclipse will first make land in Mazatlan, and cross the states of Durango and Coahuila. Entering Texas, the path of totality will then move through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland.

The longest period of totality — when viewers will be able see an eclipsed sun for four minutes 28 seconds — will occur at Nazas near Durango. After that point the moon’s shadow lengthens and narrows, reducing to a maximum totality of two minutes 52 seconds as the path exits North America in far Eastern Canada.
