30 years on from Zapatista uprising, influence of EZLN movement remains strong

On January 1, members of the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN) celebrated the 30th anniversary of its uprising in the state of Chiapas against the neoliberal Mexican government.

pg3 copySpeakers at a ceremony held in the autonomous town of Dolores Hidalgo deep in the Lacandon jungle highlighted the challenges faced by their own communities and other indigenous peoples in Mexico continue to face, chiefly the threat of violence from organized crime and the forced displacement from their traditional lands.

EZLN spokesperson Moisés said that since the short-lived rebellion the autonomous communities have proved that they can govern themselves without the need for assistance from governments, and stressed the movement’s commitment to eschewing mainstream politics.
