Supreme Court reverses Mexico City bullfighting ban

In a blow to animal rights activists, Mexico’s Supreme Court has lifted the suspension of bullfights at Mexico City’s Plaza Mexico, the largest bullring in the world.

pg3aAround 18 months ago, an NGO managed to persuade a district judge to halt all corridas at the venue because bullfighting violated laws governing animal welfare and the bulls’ “right to a healthy existence.”

The nation’s highest tribunal ruled on December 6 that the suspension of the bullfights “restricts” the rights of individuals who earn their livings from this activity.

Shortly following the ruling, Plaza Mexico officials announced a forthcoming season of nine bullfights, starting on Sunday, January 28, and running through March 24.  The corrida on February 9 will feature exclusively female bullfighters.
