British ambassador removed from post for imprudent ‘joke’

In a shock development, the British Ambassador to Mexico, Jon Benjamin, has reportedly been removed from his position after pointing an assault rifle at a frightened embassy employee.

A short video of the incident, which allegedly took place inside a vehicle during an official trip to Sinaloa and Durango in April, was subsequently posted on the “X”  platform, apparently by embassy employees disgruntled at their treatment by Benjamin. The face of the target was blurred out, and laughter can be heard in background.

The image was accompanied with the text: “British Ambassador to Mexico, Jon Benjamin, points a semi automatic weapon at a concerned Mexican staff member. In the context of daily killings in Mexico by drug dealers, he dares to joke.”

There has been plenty of secrecy from the UK British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) surrounding Benjamin’s demise, with no official announcement being made.  It is not clear exactly when he was quietly removed from his job, or if he has been dismissed from the foreign service.   Benjamin has remained active on his “X” account, which no longer refers to his Foreign Office background.  His last reposting concerning Mexico was on May 10. Since then, his postings have centred on other topics, including several about his favorite soccer team, West Ham United.
