An article in Rolling Stone reports that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team is discussing plans for a “soft invasion” of Mexico to combat drug cartels.
The proposed strategy involves limited covert operations, such as deploying U.S. special forces to target cartel leaders and using drones or aircraft to strike cartel laboratories and infrastructure, the magazine revealed.
The idea of deploying the U.S. military directly in Mexico to confront cartels has gained plenty of traction among MAGA Republicans. Two of Trump’s key cabinet nominees, Pete Hegseth (Defense Secretary) and Marco Rubio (Secretary of State), reportedly support the idea, though Rubio has clarified that his backing is contingent on cooperation with Mexican authorities.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has strongly opposed any strategy involving foreign troops on Mexican soil, emphasizing the importance of respecting Mexico’s sovereignty. She has reaffirmed Mexico’s willingness to collaborate fully on bilateral security efforts, prioritizing intelligence-sharing and coordinated action.
