Robin Brodie Lockhart Ewart

Dr. Robin Brodie Lockhart Ewart of Louisville, Kentucky and Chapala passed away unexpectedly on April 13 at the age of 73.

Born September 26, 1939 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Ewart graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a medical degree. He later received honors and distinction in Endocrinology and Biochemistry from the University of Sussex, England.

During his postgraduate education, Ewart was a house surgeon in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and house physician and senior officer in the Endocrine and Metabolic Unit of the University Department of Medicine. He achieved the prestigious rank of consultant at the University of Medicine, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.

A fellow in the Division of Biochemistry, University of Sussex, Ewart was also an assistant professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin and a tenured professor and Vice Chairman, Department of Medicine, and Acting Chief, Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology at the University of Louisville. He served as Chief of Medical Services at the V. A. Medical Center, Louisville. He was a member of many professional societies.

Ewart loved to teach and received many accolades and awards. Through his research grants, he had over 25 publications in the fields of biochemistry and diabetes.

Ewart was a true Renaissance man, being well versed in the arts, music, and literature. He loved jazz and could play the saxophone. He was a great raconteur, eloquently expressing his interesting experiences in life and captivating those around him. He loved people and was able to share his knowledge with volunteer work in Louisville, and in his adopted towns of Chapala and Ajijic.

Ewart moved to Lakeside in 2003 and supported many causes, including the Red Cross, and also taught English to adults and children. Many have been touched by his humility, generosity, and kindness.

Ewart is survived by his many dear friends and colleagues in the medical field; his close friends, that he felt were his family: the Heim family, the Pfeiffer family, Dr. Michael Alt, and his feline pets that he cherished, and many others.
