Two killed in Puerto Vallarta shooting

Two men from Zapopan were shot dead and another was left seriously injured after their car came under fire in downtown Puerto Vallarta last month.

Brothers Francisco and Juan Felipe Morales Garcia were killed and their companion Antonio Camacho was gravely wounded when armed men traveling in two pickup trucks blocked off their car and opened fire with AK-47 assault rifles just after 1 a.m. on October 17.

The incident took place on Venustiano Carranza in the Zona Romantica, a popular tourist area just south of the Malecon. Clients and workers at nearby establishments threw themselves to the ground and took cover as the assailants peppered the victims’ white Volkswagen sedan with over 35 bullets, Spanish-language daily El Informador reported.

Municipal police officers arrived late to the scene, despite receiving multiple emergency calls, due to the reduced number of police vehicles in service, El Informador added.

Camacho, who was taken to hospital, provided investigators with a brief description of events. He said that he and the two brothers had come from Zapopan, part of the Guadalajara metropolitan zone, and had decided to go out for a few drinks when they came under attack.
