Reoccurrence of dead fish strikes Jalisco lake

For the third time this summer Lake Cajititlan has suffered a massive fish kill.

This time, thousands of dead mojara were found along the shores of the pueblos of Cuazcomatitlan and Cajititlan.

According to municipal authorities, the fish died from the same biological phenomena that has affected the lake for years: a lack of oxygen due to fertilizer runoff into the lake during heavy rains.

Workers spent hours getting rid of the dead fish, which were causing a fetid odor along the lake.

The Jalisco Environmental Protection Agency is checking the three sewage treatment plants that serve the four communities around the lake to see if they are being operated optimally.
