Tlaquepaque installs artistic homage to piggy banks

Following on from last year’s dramatic umbrella montage, around 50 large pigs have taken up residence in the center of Tlaquepaque.

The colorful, over-size alcancias (piggy banks) are attracting the attention of visitors along the two principal streets of the popular crafts center, and in various stores.

The project, backed by the municipality’s tourism department, is called Tocinarte, a play on the word tocino, meaning bacon in Spanish.

The creators of the whimsical pigs are mostly local artists, and each is being sponsored by a Tlaquepaque business. Kids are invited to paint their own piggy banks at Tlaquepaque’s regular weekend arts participation space, which takes place from noon to 7 p.m. each Saturday and Sunday in the main plaza.

The pigs will stay on show until October 23, when they will be displayed in other metro area municipalities.  For more information, visit TocinArte Tlaquepaque on Facebook.
