New bicycle law passes

The Jalisco Congress Thursday approved a law that provides cyclists in the state with important legal protections.

A major feature of the “BiciLey” (Bicycle Law) is that it obliges motorists overtaking cyclists to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters (just under five feet).  Under the new law, drivers can also face fines of up to 4,000 pesos for invading dedicated cycle lanes.

It is now written into transit law that cyclists have the right to circulate in the center of right-hand lanes, not just to one side of them.  In these cases, motorized vehicles must maintain a distance of seven meters when traffic is flowing, or five meters when it is stationary.
