Tourism record set
The number of international tourists visiting Mexico in the first quarter of 2018 increased by 12.6 percent compared with last year, setting a new record, according to the nation’s Tourism Ministry.
The total of 10.6 million international visitors was up from 9.4 million in 2017. The country received just over $US6.2 billion in tourism revenue during this period.
Last year, Mexico was the sixth most visited country in the world.
Hayek speaks out
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Mexican actress Salma Hayek urged male stars to take pay cuts to help balance gender inequality in the entertainment industry. A vocal activist for the struggle for women’s rights, Hayek has been one of the industry’s most vocal supporters of the Me Too movement. Hayek also spoke out at the mistreatment/racism she received at the hands of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
