State sponsors new English-language learning program

To get more young people from different backgrounds proficient in English, the Jalisco state government is sponsoring a new language learning program called Recrea Inglés.

The goal over the next 12 months is to enroll 35,500 students in face-to-face classes and 3,000 in virtual classes, said Juan Carlos Flores Miramontes, state secretary of Education. The program began last week at 15 secondary and high school campuses in six metro-area municipalities (El Salto, Guadalajara, San Pedro Tlaquepaque, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Tonalá and Zapopan), with plans to expand rapidly to 95 locations in 27 municipalities, he said.

Miramontes said the program will be “aligned with international standards” and be supported by the popular educational technology platform Duolingo.  Around 700 instructors will be trained to give the classes, he said. The aim is for students to reach the B2 English level after 18 months of instruction. (B2 corresponds to those who have the necessary fluency to communicate without effort with native speakers.)

Interested parties must download, fill out and sign a commitment letter at the time of pre-registration at recrea.jalisco.gob.mx/recrea-ingles.
