Jalisco’s bicentennial murals

A huge celebration to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the state of Jalisco gets underway at 5 p.m. Friday, June 16 in the Parque Luis Quintanar (formerly Parque de la Solidaridad) in Tonala.

pg1bTopping the entertainment bill are the Los Ángeles Azules, one of Mexico’s most popular bands, who will debut a new song written especially for the occasion in their cumbia sonidera style.

Various other musical and dance performances are scheduled during the celebration, which is free to the public and concludes around 11 p.m. with a big fireworks display.

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro will preside over the bicentennial event, and inaugurate around 900 million pesos’ worth of recent improvements to the park that include new picnic areas, reflecting pools and a skatepark. An athletics track is still under construction.

Four large murals commissioned under the state government’s Traza Jalisco urban art program will also be unveiled in the park.
