Rains cause havoc in Tlaquepaque

Heavy rains on July 27 and 28 flooded out 515 homes in the metro-area suburb of Tlaquepaque, prompting local authorities to declare a state of emergency (declaratoria de emergencia).

pg8bHouses affected were in the neighborhoods of Villa Fontana, Ojo de Agua, Juan de la Barrera, La Micaelita, La Duraznera, Fraccionamiento Revolución, La Guadalupana, Las Huertas, Valle de la Misericordia, Haciendas de San Martín, El Vergel, La Romita and El Campesino.  Most of these colonias are low-income areas where residents will be cash strapped to replace damaged households items.

The Tlaquepaque city council reported that, in coordination with the municipal Family Development Agency (DIF), 1,800 despensas (food and supplies packages) were distributed to residents affected by the flooding.

Jaime Manzano Núñez, Tlaquepaque’s Civil Protection coordinator, said 2,332 homes are being reviewed for damages.

Under the state of emergency declaration, financial and material restitution can be provided to residents whose homes have suffered damages.
