Talks have once again broken down between the Department of Communications and Transportation (SCT) and Ejido El Zapote (landowners cooperative) who seek what they see as proper compensation for lands expropriated from them decades ago for the construction of Guadalajara’s airport.  

What may be for some a day to celebrate the life of a certain loved one, it should come as little surprise that not everybody’s father is still bestriding the surface of the earth - that is, unless somebody decided to take his or her recently deceased pater familias down to the taxidermist and have him arranged in a mid-stride pose, stuffed and placed next to the mantelpiece.  

Tlaquepaque’s yearly fair - which kicked off last Saturday, June 17 - continues its myriad cultural, gastronomical and recreational goings-on through Tuesday, July 2. Coinciding with the festival is the 41st edition of the National Ceramic Awards, a big deal in a town which counts the manufacture and sale of assorted crafts among its most important sources of revenue. 

Canadian Consul and Trade Commissioner in Guadalajara Stéphane Charbonneau is looking forward to this year’s Canada Day. “On July 1, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation, an important milestone for our nation. This historic year provides us with the unique opportunity to strengthen our sense of what it means to be Canadian and to show it to the world. Our events throughout the year touch on four themes: diversity and inclusiveness, reconciliation with the indigenous peoples, youth and the environment. 

The Wolrd Naked Bike Ride attracted 800 participants last Saturday in Guadalajara. Due to instances of harassment by dressed photogrphers, the number of female participants dropped significantly from the 2016 ride.

Over 4,000 revelers spangled in all the colors of the rainbow took to the streets Saturday, June 10, as part of Guadalajara’s annual Pride Parade. And for the first time in the parade’s history, the marchers witnessed a Jalisco governor participating in the proceedings, his presence a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the state’s LGBT community. 

Goethe Institute Mexiko, the Mexican branch of an organization funded by the German government for the promotion and dissemination of general German-ness around the world, will re-open its Guadalajara branch after a near decade-long absence.  

Monday, June 12, measurements taken in Tlaquepaque found that lung-damaging ozone levels had spiked above 200 puntos imeca (Mexico’s standard for measuring urban air quality). Anything above 100 puntos imeca is considered hazardous to human health.
