Jalisco authorities have issued a warning about a new criminal modus operandi in which thieves use social media and online vehicle marketplaces to lure potential buyers into robberies. 

Many people, including a lot of local real estate hustlers, like to tell expat newcomers they can get along just fine without understanding or speaking Spanish. In my book, that is lousy advice in a practical sense, and an insult to the native folks who graciously accept our presence here at lakeside.

To encourage citizens to draw up wills, the federal government has proclaimed September “Mes de Testamento” and public notaries are lowering their fees throughout the month.

Barranca Miradorin the works

Guadalajara has begun work on an extensive mirador (or viewing point) on the edge of the famous Barranca de Oblatos, on the northeast edge of town. The 7,000-square-meter area is being developed near Huentitan el Alto and will be reached by continuing on the Calzada Independencia or Calzada Ejercito. Fifteen galleries, a parking lot and the planting of 2,000 pine trees will cover the area, which looks out on the majestic Huentitan barranca, the deep canyon reminiscent of the Grand Canyon. 

A partial lunar eclipse will be visible across Guadalajara, the lakeside region and most of Jalisco on the night of Thursday, August 27, with 93 percent of the moon entering Earth’s shadow. The phenomenon will be the most impressive lunar eclipse of the year for Jalisco viewers.

“Gratitude” may be the theme of Thanksgiving, but for many of us, our ways of expressing it in Spanish are often limited to one word: “gracias.” As we celebrate a holiday centered around giving thanks, it’s the perfect time to discover how our neighbors in Mexico express gratitude with more color and nuance.
