Revered Virgin takes long road home

As has been the tradition for many decades, just before daybreak on Monday, October 12 the tiny, revered statue of the Virgin of Zapopan will be wheeled out of the Guadalajara Cathedral, placed carefully on an elaborate float and driven very slowly back to her ancestral home in the Zapopan Basilica, preceded by thousands of high-octane ethnic dancers, decked out in colorful indigenous costumes. 

La Generala’s miraculous past

The legend of the Virgen of Zapopan began in 1525 when Franciscan friars arrived in what is now Zapopan to convert the local Indians.

Parade honors state fair’s 50th year

An estimated 8,000 people lined Avenida Chapultepec Sunday to watch the colorful parade marking the start of the annual Fiestas de Octubre (state fair), now in its 50th year.
