Patriotic dancing

A “Gran Baile” to help fund Ajijic’s Fiestas Patrias will be held Saturday, August 26, 8:30 p.m. at the Huerta de Serna events hall in West Ajijic. Music will be by Sonora Primavera and Mariachi Real Axixic. A Mexican cena and botanas will be available.

Tickets, 80 pesos, are available at the Centro Cultural Ajijic and the Ajjic Delegacion office.

Naked Stage

“Opening Night,” a comedy by Norm Foster and directed by Roseann Wilshere, is the next offering at The Naked Stage Readers’ Theatre Friday, August 25 through Sunday, August 27.

Jack and Ruth Tisdale celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an evening at the theater. It’s a dream come true for Ruth and an imposition for Jack, who would rather be at home watching the World Series. However, after the events both on and off the stage that fateful night, their lives and those of all involved are irreparably altered.

The Naked Stage is located at Hidalgo 261 on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar. Donation: 100 pesos. Cartonería workshops

Learn to make traditional Day of the Dead papier maché figurines at a series of workshops that will be held every Thursday, 11 to 2 p.m., August 24 through October 24 at Café-Galería La 133, located at Independencia 133, opposite the plaza in San Antonio Tlayacapan.

Participants will practice the technique by fashioning models of elegantly attired lady and gentlemen skeletons. A fee of 120 pesos per session includes materials. Space is limited. Sincrónico II

Chapala’s second annual Sincrónico contemporary arts festival continues through September 23.

Friday, August 25: Poetry festival, readings and independent publishers book fair, 6 p.m., Chapala plaza.

Thursday, August 31: Presentation of the poetry collection “Remanso de Mil Aguas” (Oasis of a Thousand Waters), by Berónica Palacios, 7:30 p.m., Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia (CCAP) in Chapala.

LLT playhouse series

The Lakeside Little Theatre (LLT) presents a screening of the National Theatre Live performance of “Obsession” Saturday, September 9, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 10, 3 p.m. The play is directed by Ivo van Hove and stars Jude Law.

Tickets, 250 pesos, are available at the LLT box office, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon.


Viva bus trips

Viva La Musica is sponsoring bus trips to Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra concerts and a ballet performance at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara. Except for the ballet performance, the bus leaves at 4:30 p.m. with a stop at a good restaurant. Tickets (premium orchestra seats), 450 pesos (550 for non-members), are available at the LCS ticket booth on Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to noon, or by calling Rosemary Keeling at 766-1801.

Thursday, September 14: “Mexico Sinfonico,” conducted by Marco Parisotto, features “Mariachitlan” by Contreras, “Huapango” by Moncayo, a cello concerto by Marquez with soloist Carlos Prieto and “La Noche de las Mayas” by Revueltas.

Friday, September 22: The talented Ballet de Jalisco performs “Romeo and Juliet” by Sergei Prokofiev. The bus leaves at 6 p.m. Tickets for this trip are 650 pesos (750 pesos for non-members).

Wednesday, October 18: “Hungarian Impressions,” conducted by Marco Parisotto, features “Suite” by Kodaly, “Piano Concerto No.1” by Liszt, with Daniela Liebman on piano, “Hungarian Dances” by Brahms and “Mandarin Suite” by Bartok.

Thursday, October 26: Saint-Saens’ “Organ Symphony No. 3,” conducted by Marco Parisotto.
