New park offers play for pooches

Could your Fido use more discipline, relief from boredom, or just a safe place to stretch his legs? Freespirit Play Park, recently opened in San Antonio Tlayacapan, is a place where pet owners can go to satisfy any or all of those needs.

The pet playground is run by long-time lakeside resident and animal advocate Pat Lawrie. She started the venture to fulfill a life-long dream, dedicating many months to design and equip a vacant lot where dogs – and their human companions – now find ample space to workout, frolic and socialize with others of their species. Various types of obstacles set up around the grounds allow canines to exercise both body and mind in the practice of agility routines.

“Dogs that have never been stimulated much in their home environment might be timid or shy at first,” she explains. “They may just want to sit under the chair of the owner until they become more comfortable and outgoing with repeated exposure. It’s kind of like taking your child to kindergarten for the first time. They need to ‘learn’ how to play.”

The dog park operates as a membership club, with monthly dues set at 400 pesos, plus a one-time refundable 300-peso deposit for a key to the gate. Members are free to come and go as they please Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pet owners who anticipate only occasional visits may opt for a 40-peso daily rate. First-time visitors and their pets are welcome to try out the installations free of charge.

A program of canine obedience classes should be available in the near future.

In addition, Lawrie has set aside Sundays for equestrian activities only. A dressage and training ring is located in a separate section of the property. There is also a small boarding facility for horses that comprises four stalls and adjacent paddocks.

Freespirit is located at Ramon Corona 166, on the west end of San Antonio, next door to the town soccer field. For further information contact Lawrie at 766-4170, Cel. 333-442-6244 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
