Presbyterians to open theological institute

The Lakeside Presbyterian Church has received official licensing and registration with the government of Mexico as the “Instituto Teological de Lago,” (Lakeside Institute of Theology).

This means that seminary level courses that are open to everyone will be offered from September. Those who wish to study may register in programs leading to one of two certificate options (requiring either eight or 12 courses) or one of two masters-level degrees (requiring either 19 or 24 courses). The new institute is also certified to license ministers, an option for those completing the masters-level programs.

The first courses will be “Old Testament Survey” beginning on September 10 and meeting on Mondays, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for eight weeks. “Old Testament Theology” will begin on September 12 and will meet on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for eight weeks. Another course, “How to Study the Bible,” will start on September 14 and will meet on Fridays at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for eight weeks. The first courses will be taught in English, but will then be repeated in Spanish in the next term.

The courses offered are listed as Old Testament Studies (5 courses) New Testament Studies (5), Christian Maturity (3), Theology (5) and Christian Leadership (6). While the courses will have solid academic content appropriate for those who seek theological training, they will be geared to a lay audience. “Anyone should be able to enjoy these courses for personal growth,” said Lakeside Presbyterian Pastor Ross Arnold, “even if they are not working toward a certificate or a degree.”

There will be no charge for sitting in on the classes; but anyone wishing to pursue a certificate or degree will be required to buy the textbooks that the Institute will make available.

For more information or to reserve your place in the courses, contact Pastor Ross Arnold at 766-1238.
