Mother arrested for kidnapping own daughter

Agents from the Jalisco Attorney General’s Office (PGJEJ) detained Maria de Lourdes Rangel Aguilar, 41, along with three accomplices, for the abduction of her six-year-old daughter on Wednesday.

The child was abducted outside her school in the Zalate neighborhood of Tonala on February 21 and taken to a residence in the 20 de Noviembre neighborhood, where she was held in captivity by two of Rangel’s accomplices.

The third accomplice was arrested in Sinaloa, having made ransom demands by telephone to the girl’s father. The kidnappers initially demanded 200,000 pesos but eventually released the child in return for 47,500 pesos.

Rangel, who is said to have six other children, all of whom live with their fathers, said she was motivated by financial problems and revenge against her ex-husband, who has custody of their daughter.

“I knew it would hurt him and that he would pay for her. He had agreed to help pay off my debts but he never did, he always made me promises and never fulfilled them,” Rangel said when presented before the media on Wednesday.

“Forgive me for what I did, she did not deserve it and I’m very sorry,” Rangel added, in tears.

The suspects have been transferred to the maximum security Puente Grande on the eastern outskirts of Guadalajara where they will await trial.
