Guadalajara neighborhood takes pedestrian safety into own hands

The innovative initiative saw crosswalk “animal” designs – including zebra and tiger crossings, as well as paw prints – painted at various streets corners.  The neighborhood association asked homeowners to pitch in for the materials, but it’s not clear whether the project will get the blessing of transportation authorities.  With several schools in the area, residents hope the distinctive markings will improve pedestrian safety in the neighborhood.  Unlike in other parts of the world, however, motorists are not obliged to stop for pedestrians who have stepped on to one of Guadalajara’s “zebra” crossings.
