New x-ray machines may reduce airport lines

Several airlines, however, are refusing to pay the fees for the new technology imposed by the airport’s operators and say they will continue the personal revisions for the time being.'

Manual checks of luggage prior to check-in began eight years ago and often contribute to long lines at the Guadalajara Airport, especially as flights near their departure times.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), which operates Guadalajara and 11 other Western Mexican airports, says passengers can expect to save around 40 minutes standing in line thanks to the new x-ray machines.

All airlines flying out Guadalajara, with the exception of Aeromexico and VivaAerobús, are using the new technology.

The two Mexican airlines are refusing to pay the fees for the x-ray checks, which GAP says work out to 12 pesos per passenger.

A VivaAerobús spokesperson said the private security company hired to revise luggage manually charges eight pesos per passenger.
