Metro area needs more churches, archbishop says

An archdiocese team is working to identify land to build churches in many new fraccionamientos (subdivisions), especially in the municipality of Tlajomulco.

“(Developers) aren’t reserving land for temples,” Robles complained this week.

Robles said the lack of churches makes it difficult for the archdiocese to reach out to Catholics in need of spiritual support. Rival denominations have poached many followers of Mexico’s traditional religion in recent years.

Robles, however, said he is encouraged by a slight increase in the number of young men signing up to train for the priesthood.  He was speaking after the ordination of 46 new Catholic priests, bringing the total in the archdiocese to 1,200.
