Neighbors criticize ‘unsafe’ city bike path

The new 5.3-kilometer track follows Avenida Santa Margarita from the city beltway (periferico) as far as Avenida Aviacion and the entrance to the Tec de Monterrey university campus.

The cycle path has been a source of controversy with many neighbors, who argue it will make the avenue more dangerous and congested by reducing its width for vehicular traffic.  Businesses and stores were also opposed to the project as it eliminated the street parking spaces outside their places of work.

So heated became the debate that the work finished almost 15 months behind schedule.  The total cost, which included a major upgrade to Avenida Santa Margarita and its sidewalks, as well as planting hundreds of trees, totalled 40 million pesos.
