Tackling dengue

The Jalisco Health Department (SSJ) has intensified preventive actions against the possible health consequences resulting from the rains in the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

These include measures to eliminate breeding sites for dengue-transmitting mosquitoes, especially in areas prone to flooding.

As of July 24, 23 cases of dengue had been confirmed in Jalisco, although the figure is always significantly under reported. One problem for authorities is that many security conscious householders—three out of four, according to one report—are refusing to allow accredited personnel onto their properties to look for breeding sites and spray insecticide. The dengue mosquito lays its eggs on the walls of water-filled containers in the house and patio. The eggs hatch when submerged in water.
