The 25th edition of Guadalajara’s International Book Fair (FIL), which last year attracted more than 600,000 visitors, opens on Saturday, November 26.

The Jalisco Congress remains closed and Guadalajara’s public transport system is in danger of grinding to a halt on Friday, November 18, as union workers threaten to strike in solidarity with around 1,400 congress employees who have not been paid for the first two weeks of November.

Although an increase in city bus fares has not been authorized, some drivers in Guadalajara were illegally charging new tariffs this week.

The cause of bad odors detected by some athletes staying at the Pan American Games Village has come to light. Faulty treatment plants meant that sewage was being pumped out of the village on to land beside the complex and even into the nearby Bosque Primavera nature reserve, it has emerged.

After all the hype and lofty expectations, the Pan American Games has not given local businesses the large economic boost that many had been hoping for.
