Authorities name suspects in Margolis murder case

Gilberto Abrego Barragán, 26, and Luis Daniel Romero Ríos, 21, are behind bars facing charges of armed robbery and intentional homicide after confessing to their involvement in a violent home invasion that led to the death of elderly Chapala resident Raymond Margolis.

A third suspect, whose name has not been revealed, remains at large.

Margolis was brutally beaten during the April 22 assault at his downtown Chapala residence. He succumbed to his injuries eight days later while under treatment at a Guadalajara hospital.

The Jalisco Attorney General’s office (FGE) reports that Abrego, a construction worker, and a Romero, an electronics technician, were captured on May 5 in a joint operation by state investigators and Chapala police. The men admitted to carrying out the crime, telling authorities that they knew the victim kept large sums of cash on the premises. The case has been turned over to the Chapala criminal court for prosecution.
