Bamboo nursery opens doors

Chapala retiree Christian Robertson is a man on a mission, and he’s asking you to join him.

pg15aFounder of the local environmental sustainability group, Bambú Warriors, he is fighting to make the world a better place, one bamboo plant at a time. To help achieve that goal, on December 8  he opened the doors to Chapala’s first all-bamboo vivero (nursery) and gift shop.

Known as the world’s fastest growing plant, many types of bamboo are native to Mexico and thrive locally. After two years, bamboo plants generally do not need to be water-ed, surviving only on rain water. Without chemicals or pesticides, the plants can be harvested in just a few years, much faster than trees for commercial wood. And they absorb more carbon dioxide than trees, while releasing more oxygen into the atmosphere. These are just a few of the reasons that Robertson became passionate about bamboo.
