Canadian documentaries

Two award-winning Canadian documentary films are showing over the next two weeks at the Guillermo del Toro movie theater located inside the Instituto Cultural Cabañas.

“The Crash Reel,” directed by Lucy Walker, uses 15 years of verite footage to show the epic rivalry between half-pipe legends Shaun White and Kevin Pearce, childhood friends who become number one and two in the world, leading up to the Vancouver Winter Olympics, pushing one another to ever more dangerous tricks, until Kevin crashes on a Park City half-pipe, barely surviving.

In Sarah Polley’s “Stories We Tell” the director becomes both filmmaker and detective as she investigates the secrets kept by a family of storytellers – her own. The film looks at the relationship between Polley’s parents, including the revelation that the filmmaker and actress was the product of an extramarital affair between her mother and a Montreal producer. In this genre-twisting film, Polley discovers that the truth depends on who’s telling it.

“The Crash Reel” – October 24, 25, 26, 29 and 30,  4 and 6 p.m.  “Stories We Tell” – October 31, November 1, 2, 5 and 6 at 4 and 6 p.m.
