Swan Lake
Tickets are going fast for four performances of Swan Lake to be given by the Ballet de Jalisco at the end of July and beginning of August. As most fans know, Swan Lake is a classic ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, whose plot revolves around the tragic love story of Prince Siegfried and Odette, a princess turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. The premiere of this masterpiece ballet took place on March 4, 1877, at the famous Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. The state-funded Ballet de Jalisco is a professional troupe directed by Lucy Arce.

Folk dance
Two well-known dance troupes, the Ballet Folklórico Nuevo Jalisco and the Mariachi Femenil Nuevo Tecalitlán, present “Feria de las Rosas,” a journey through five different epochs of dance in Jalisco. More than 80 dancers and musicians are participating in this exciting show.

Opera
Gianni Schicchi is a comic opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giovacchino Forzano, composed in 1917–18. The libretto is based on an incident mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy. This adaptation of “Gianni Schicchi” set in 1930s-1960s Berlin with a gangster twist is not only a creative reinterpretation of the opera, but a commentary on how the themes of greed, deceit and ambition are cross-cultural and perpetual.

Mariachi galas
The International Mariachi Festival presents its six traditional flagship galas at the Degollado Theater, in addition to one “Classic/Magno” concert at the Auditorio Telmex. The nation’s top mariachi bands are joined by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra for these special and emotional musical spectacles, which help fund the rest of the festival’s free events. Featuring Mariachi de America, Sol de America, Mariachi Los Camperos, Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan and Mariachi Internacional CHG (Gamaliel Contreras Huerta).

Chamber Orchestra
The Universidad de Guadalajara’s Higinio Ruvalcaba Chamber Orchestra presents a program featuring Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Violins in A minor and Concerto for 4 Violins in B minor, Mozart’s Divertimento, K. 136, Piano Concerto No. 4, Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto grosso in D major, Op. 6, No. 4, and a piece by Tapatío composer Abraham Calva.

Carmina Burana
One of the emblematic works of the symphonic genre, Carmina Burana, is interpreted by musicians from four groups: the Coro Sinfónico Opus 11, the Coro Harmonnía, the Coro del Conservatorio Nacional de Música and the Camerata Opus 11. Composed by Carl Orff in 1935-1936, the work is based on a collection of medieval poems contained in a manuscript known as the “Codex Buranus,” which was discovered in 1803 at the Benedictine monastery of Benediktbeuern in Bavaria, Germany.

Homage to Orozco
Included in the International Mariachi Festival is this homage to famed Jalisco-born muralist Jose Clemente Orozco and his work “El Hombre de Fuego” (Man on Fire) that adorns Guadalajara’s Hospicio Cabañas Institute. This gala features the acclaimed Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán group, together with a full orchestra.

Rolando Villazón
Acclaimed Mexican operatic tenor Rolando Villazón returns to Guadalajara for the first time in 14 years. Accompanied by the Orquesta Solistas de América under the direction of Iván López Reynoso, Villazón will be joined on stage by soprano Anabel de la Mora and mezzzosoprano Itzel de la Rosa. Known for his vibrant stage presence and charismatic performances, Villazón has gained international acclaim for his roles in a wide range of operatic repertoire, particularly in the works of composers such as Verdi, Puccini and Mozart. His program at the Conjunto’s Sala Plácido Domingo will include pieces by Mozart, Donizetti, Rossini and Verdi, among others.
