Haydn choral performances slated

The prestigious Jalisco State Choir sings a free concert of “Stabat Mater,” a religious work by Franz Joseph Haydn, at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, in the Paraninfo of the University of Guadalajara, highly renowned for its acoustics and the 1936 mural by Orozco on its cupola.

The concert will be repeated on Thursday, November 29, 8 p.m., at the Instituto Cultural Cabañas.

Sergio Hernandez leads the prestigious choir’s 41 singers in this piece, which recounts the painful vigil maintained by the mother of Jesus at her son’s crucifixion. The 70-minute work, composed in 1767, is said to have been Haydn’s best known sacred work in his lifetime, although today it has been eclipsed in popularity by works of the same name by other composers.

“This is a beautiful piece,” said Hernandez, “and a nice opportunity for several soloists. Jose Maria Lopez sings a tenor solo, Lucia Preciado is the soprano soloist, Mario Sanchez will sing bass, and Teresa Banderas sings the mezzo solo.”

These are the last concerts before Christmas choir concerts begin, Hernandez added. Pianist Marco Antonio Navarro will accompany.

Although both concerts are free, tickets for the Paraninfo concert must be obtained in order to enter. They are available at the Music office, Ignacio Ramírez 24, between Hidalgo and Morelos, (33) 3827-5911, and at the Foro de Arte y Cultura, Alcalde 1451, north of Avila Camacho, (33) 3030-9769. The Cabañas concert does not require tickets.

The Paraninfo is at Enrique Díaz de León and Avenida Juárez; Instituto Cultural Cabañas is at Cabañas 8 off Plaza Tapatía, Guadalajara.
