Guadalajara and Miami film festivals team up

The Guadalajara and Miami International Film Festivals recently announced a partnership, providing industry guests with access to movies and events in both locations.

The Guadalajara event (FICG) runs from March 1 to 9 next year, while the Miami festival (MIFF) takes place simultaneously from March 1 to 10. The industry offices will facilitate travel between the two events and grant access to special programs at each festival designed to foster and promote Hispanic cinema.

The partnership will also mean industry buyers will have access to the MIFF’s “Encuentros” program and the FICG’s “Construye” program, which help connect distributors, financiers, and sales agents with Hispanic filmmakers and, as well as promoting Latin American movies. The partnership should increase the number of buyers at each festival, increasing the participating directors’ exposure and chances of sealing a deal.

One movie that helped unite the two festivals this year was “Mariachi Gringo,” a joint production from studios in Guadalajara and New York. The film received its world premier at the opening of the MIFF and also won the FICG’s top prize for best Mexican feature.
