Lunes de Musica

The Palacio de la Cultura y la Comunicación (Palcco) is offering a new series of Monday recitals in their salon de camera.

September 19: countertenor Daniel Moody, accompanied by pianist David Fung. September 26: Samuel Armas and Marco Antonio Navarro play piano “four hands.”

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.   September 20: Recital by pianist Patricia Garcia-Torres. Pieces by Schubert, Zyman, Debussy, Arturo Márquez and others. September 27: Jalisco Canta Festival, with Joycee Díaz, soprano; Alejandro Vigo, piano. On the program will be Ottorino Respighi’s Pines of Rome, Sir Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 and Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

In between performances at the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato (see page 4), the orchestra pays tribute to the famed Spanish writer with a program featuring Richard Strauss’ “Don Quixote,” Joaquín Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” and Manuel de Falla’s  El Sombrero de Tres Picos, Suite No. 2.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

The first in a series of smaller “chamber music” programs featuring the orchestra’s leading players. Up first is a “jazz/pop” special that combines the orchestra’s principal brass musicians with the invited Jalisco Brass Ensemble. The program includes favorites such as Kandor’s “New York, New York,” Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” Abreu’s “Tico Tico” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as other gems.

GR RECOMMENDS: Ballet de Jalisco 

Before heading off to the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato (see page 4), Jalisco’s only full-time professional dance troupe presents “Don Quijote,” based on the choreography of Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky. Novelties will include “video mapping” for the scenery, and specially designed costumes for the 42 dancers. Ballet director Dariusz Blajer says he has cut down the work, normally two and a half hours long, to one hour 50 minutes.
