Cadenza Festival
The Festival Internacional Cadenza at Palcco runs in conjunction with the Ajijic Northern Lights Music Festival, and features four concerts with talented Canadian, U.S. and Mexican musicians. Sunday, February 12, 6 p.m.: Gala concert with festival’s string orchestra interpreting works by Britten, Barber and Quantz. Monday, February 13, 8:30 p.m.: Susan Hoeppner plays Mozart, Bloch, M.C. Baker and Reger.

Cirque de Soleil

Tuesday recitals
The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” features free-of-charge evening recitals scheduled each Tuesday evening. Ajijic’s Northern Lights Music Festival branches out to Guadalajara for two recitals on February 14 and 21. The first features five performers: Ariel Barnes (cello), Juan Miguel Hernández (viola), Rebecca MacLeod (violin), Susan Hoeppner (flute) and Chris Wilshere (violin), the latter also the director of the Ajijic festival, scheduled February 12-25. The program includes pieces by Ernest Bloch, Mozart, M.C. Baker and Max Reger. The February 21 recital showcases David Fung on piano with countertenor Daniel Moody, two exceptional Canadian artists and regulars at the Ajijic event. They will interpret works by Handel, Vivaldi, Purcell and others.

Ballet de Jalisco

The orchestra plays Silvestre Revueltas’ Redes Suite and Johannes Brahms’ Concerto No.1 in D minor, under the direction of Marco Parisotto. In between these two pieces, the Tambuco percussion ensemble performs Javier Alvarez’s “Metal de Tréboles” – a world premier.

Clarinetist Jeslán Fernández is the soloist in U.S. composer John Corigliano’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra. The orchestra interprets Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World,” Op. 95, B. and performs the Mexican premiere of Lollapalooza, an exuberant orchestral bursting with rhythmic motives and jazz-inspired tonality by U.S. composer John Adams, based on the rhythm of the word “lollapalooza.”
