Nouvelle Vague

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Clarinetist Jeslán Fernández is the soloist in U.S. composer John Corigliano’s Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra. The orchestra interprets Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World,” Op. 95, B. and performs the Mexican premiere of Lollapalooza, an exuberant orchestral bursting with rhythmic motives and jazz-inspired tonality by U.S. composer John Adams, based on the rhythm of the word “lollapalooza.”

The Jalisco Culture Secretariat’s “Martes de Música y Ópera” series showcases talented classical musicians at free-of-charge Tuesday evening recitals. March 21: “Cello and piano, from Baroque to Impressionism,” with Rosa María Valdez (piano) and Fernando Meza Giménez (cello). Bach, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Schubert, Rachmaninoff.  March 28: “Tenorismo” with tenors Miguel Sotomayor and Ezequiel Ojeda, accompanied by pianist Juan Pablo García. Mozart, Donizetti, Puccini, as well as romantic classics  “Júrame” (María Grever) and “Granada” (Agustín Lara) after the interval.

Shen Yun

Benefit concert

The Consular Association of Guadalajara presents a benefit concert – Un Viaje de Amor (A  Voyage of Love) – for the Casa de Descanso de la Sagrada Familia (home for seniors). Acclaimed Greek mezzo-soprano Alexandra Gravas is joined by pianist Jose Luis Gonzalez Moya. Music by Kurt Weill, Manuel M. Ponce, Maria Grever, Edith Piaf and others.

Camille Thurman Quartet

Presented by the NY Jazz All Stars. Thurman is multitalented young saxophonist, flutist, vocalist, composer and educator whose lush, velvety and warm sound has been compared to greats such as Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon and Lester Young. Her vocals remind many of Minnie Riperton, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.

Shaolin Warriors

In this all-new, fully choreographed theatrical production, the Shaolin Warriors bring remarkable skill, stunning movement and death-defying martial-arts prowess to the stage. The Zen Buddhist monks of the Shaolin temple begin training at a very young age in mental and physical disciplines. They perfect the art of hand-to-hand and weapons combat, performing feats live on stage typically seen only in the movies.

The New York Met presents a simulcast of R. Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier.” The dream cast features Renée Fleming as the Marschallin and Elīna Garanča as Octavian star in Strauss’s grandest opera. In his new production, Robert Carsen places the action at the end of the Habsburg Empire, underscoring the opera’s subtext of class and conflict against a rich backdrop of gilt and red damask, in a staging that also stars Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs.

Clayton Brothers

Presented by the NY Jazz All Stars. This quintet is the brainchild of Jeff Clayton, who plays alto sax and oboe, in addition to the French horn and flute. He has recorded with many well-known musicians, including Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, Patti Labelle and Earth Wind & Fire. Brother John Clayton is a bassist and worked for the Los Angeles Philharmonic as the artistic director of jazz from 1998 through 2001. His work has been nominated for multiple Grammy awards.
