Acrobatic ‘Nutcracker’
The Dalian Acrobatic Troupe from China gives several performances of “The Terracota Prince” – loosely based on the famous E.T.A. Hoffman tale. In this version, however, the prince is a terracotta warrior buried with China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, and the story is told not through ballet, but dazzling acrobatics and circus magic performed by the 45-member troupe.

‘La Traviata’
One of the most anticipated Metropolitan Opera shows of the season will be telecast live to Guadalajara (and hundreds of other venues worldwide). Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Michael Mayer’s richly textured new production, featuring a dazzling 19th-century setting that changes with the seasons. Soprano Diana Damrau plays the tragic heroine, Violetta, and tenor Juan Diego Flórez return to the Met for the first time since 2015 to sing the role of Alfredo, Violetta’s hapless lover. Baritone Quinn Kelsey is Alfredo’s father, Germont, who destroys their love. Later performances feature Anita Hartig, Stephen Costello, Artur Ruciński, and Plácido Domingo.

Mariachi opera
Commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera, “Cruzar la Cara de la Luna” tells the story of Mexican migrants chasing the “American Dream.” Written by Pepe Martínez and Leonard Foglia, the opera has more than 50 performers on stage, as well as the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán and Mariachi Juvenil de mi Tierra.

Live from the Met
In “Adriana Lecouvreur,” Anna Netrebko takes on the title role of the real-life French actress who dazzled 18th-century audiences with her on-and-off stage passion. Sir David McVicar’s staging, which sets the action in a working replica of a Baroque theater, premiered at the Royal Opera House in London, where the Guardian praised the “elegant production, sumptuously designed.”
