Even with the Fiestas de Octubre in full swing, October is gearing up to be an exciting month for cultural activities in Guadalajara. Here’s a synopsis of some of the top events on offer:
The esteemed Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra kicked off its winter/fall season at the Teatro Degollado on Thursday, October 6, with the repeat performance of the first program set for Sunday, October 9, 12:30 p.m. Program Two showcases works by Hernández Lazo, Infanzón, Zanabria and Bernstein on October 13 and 16, and Program Four García Islas, Ponce and Shostakovich on October 27 and 30. DakhaBrakha, a Ukrainian folk music quartet which combines the musical styles of several ethnic groups, plays at the Conjunto Santander de Artes Escénicas Friday, October 14, 8:30 p.m.
The Ballet de Jalisco professional dance troupe perform the Faust ballet and Walpurgis Night at Palcco (Av. Central Guillermo González Camarena 375, Poniente, Zapopan) Friday, October 14, 8 p.m. Tickets, 200 pesos, at theater box office or ticketmaster.com.mx.
The Guadalajara Regional Museum (Liceo 60, centro historico) presents recitals by talented UdeG music department students Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m. in October and November. October 19: Javier Somoza, guitar; October 26, Carlos Paul Rondon, viola and Carlos Gutierrez, piano; November 9: Departamento de Música choir; November 16: Opera Gala; November 23: Nimbe Salgado, soprano and Rocio Gonzalez, piano; November 30: The Latinoamericana Chamber and symphonic bands from the Department of Music. The Jalisco State Choir, accompanied by the Orquesta de Cámara de Zapopan, interpret Mozart’s Requiem at the Teatro Degollado, Wednesday, October 26, 8:30 p.m.
Fresh from the Cervantino Festival, French dance company Compagnie Vivons! Presents Never Twenty One, a tribute to the victims of gun violence in New York, Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg, who will never turn 21. The Cirque du Soleil presents Kooza, a show marking the Canadian company’s return to more traditional circus arts with clowning and acrobatics. The Gran Carpa (big tent) will be set up in Plaza Patria for shows on the following dates:
