‘Ariels’ salute Mexico’s best films

For the second year in a row, Guadalajara will host the annual Ariel Awards recognizing the best of Mexican cinema.

pg6Mexico’s Oscars, as they are sometimes called, will be held at the Teatro Degollado on Saturday, September 7.

Awards are given in 24 categories. The most prestigious award is the Ariel de Oro (Gold Ariel) for Best Film. Four of the five movies nominated in this category can be seen on digital platforms, either Netflix or Amazon Prime. They are all well-told stories, and worth viewing to get a distinct cinematic view of Mexican society and culture. They are:

Heroico (Heroic). Luis, an 18-year-old boy with Indigenous roots, enters the Heroic Military College in hopes of ensuring a better future. There, he encounters a rigid and institutionally violent system designed to turn him into a perfect soldier. Available on Amazon Prime.
