During their Sunday, February 22 visit to Ajijic, masked Tastoánes from Tonalá put on a spectacular demonstration of the age-old ritual dances that retell the legend of the spiritual conquest of the region’s indigenous people.
Many spectators winced as the character representing Santo Santiago beat the native pagans into submission, utilizing Mezquite switches that left vivid crimson marks on the exposed skin of their arms and legs.
A collection of grotesque Tastoán made by master craftsman Jesús Delgado will remain on display for one more week at the Artesanias shop adjacent to the Auditorio de la Ribera in La Floresta.
