Lakeside charity to benefit from LLT’s staging of ‘tragic but ultimately uplifting’ play

Lakeside Little Theatre will present the award-winning drama “Facing East” June 21, 22 and 23, in honor of Gay Pride Month and to raise funds for the local non-profit Ajijic Cares.

pg16Written by Carol Lynn Pearson, the play depicts the tortuous conversation that a devout Mormon couple has over the grave of their young son, an accomplished cellist. Difficult, suppressed truths emerge, not the least of which being the couple’s complicity in their son’s suicide – a point made much more poignant when their son’s gay partner arrives unexpectedly.

Asserted Variety: “[Facing East] resembles the last scenes of a Greek tragedy, a vivid rumination on grief, regret and shame … [There is] near-sacred stillness and elegance in this lament …”

The play is “riveting,” said producer David Ellison, who will also play the role of the father. He saw a production of “Facing East” in San Francisco 14 years ago, and has been both haunted and inspired ever since. “I just had to bring this tragic but ultimately uplifting story to Lakeside.”
