Local artist shows paintings, prints at Casa del Sol Inn

Rocío Vera Cortés, a lakeside artist whose work features elements that shape the Mexican identity, kicks off a month-long showing of paintings and engravings with an opening on Friday, July 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Casa del Sol Inn in Ajijic.

pg16aThe “Wonderful World of Women” consists of 18 works from three collections: oils of local landscapes, oils and mixed media of Mexican women and wildlife, and her engravings. The exhibit will be up through the end of July.

Vera’s work has a deep connection with Lake Chapala and its surroundings, highlighting the textures of its landscapes, the faces of its inhabitants, its gastronomy and many festive traditions.

A self-taught painter with 18 years of professional experience, Vera started engraving in 2018. Originally from the village of San Miguel Zapotitlan, a few miles west of Poncitlan, she moved to Chapala in 2020. During the Covid pandemic she was hired to create various home murals, but continued to paint and create engravings on linoleum (linocuts), which she prints in a large press in her home in Riberas del Pilar.

Vera’s home is inviting, framed by plants, and paintings and prints on the walls. The smell of wood from her husband’s carpentry workshop percolates through the house.
