Art show at Sol y Luna to benefit Jaltepec university

Karen Spencer will exhibit her photographs and unique tracing drawings throughout December at the Sol y Luna Gallery, located on Calle Rio Bravo.

pg17bShe has pledged to donate 50 percent of her sales to the Centro Educativo Jaltepec, a technical university founded in 1968 that offers a two-year degree program in Hotel and Hospitality Management exclusively for young women. The school’s motto is “Transforming women for life.”

Jaltepec began as a unique retreat house, convention center, and hotel, as well as a hospitality management school. Over 600 students have graduated, having spent long days balancing chores and classes to master the intricacies of hospitality service while developing valuable social and business skills. Many of these young women come from large families with limited financial resources, funding part of their tuition themselves and benefiting from sponsored scholarships. Spencer herself is a donor supporting one of the current students.

One notable alumna of Jaltepec is Gloria Rodríguez Villaseñor, a talented chef and co-owner of the popular Teocintle Maíz restaurant in Ajijic.
